It’s that time of year! The New Year brings time for reflection and setting resolutions or goals for the New Year! But even when we have the best intentions for our resolutions, we all know that we often stumble and fall back into our habitual ways.
Here are some of our tried and true ways to flush out your goals and make sure they stick! Hint: when they really align with your purpose and priorities, it’s easier to stick to them!
1. Set Lifetime Goals
Think about where you want to be 5+ years from now. I’m talking real big picture stuff! Consider breaking out your goals into some/all of the following categories:
2. Set Smaller Goals
Work backward from your lifetime goals to set some intermediate milestones. Like if the above is where you want to be in 5 years, what do you need to do by year 4, 3, 2, and then 1? Your year 1 milestones are what we will focus on for THIS year!
3. Refine & Prioritize
That was a lot of categories to consider for your lifetime goals. Consider, and decide which of those are most important to you, and which are just distractions or irrelevant.
For the goals that you deem most important for this year, make them “SMART”:
- Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
- Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
- Achievable (agreed, attainable).
- Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
- Time-bound (time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive)

4. Stay on Course
Periodically and regularly review your goals. Block out time in your calendar each month or quarter to reassess to see if you’re on the right track. If not, how can you make moves in the right direction, or reorganize your time accordingly?
Note: Failing doesn’t matter much, as long as you’re learning and bettering yourself along the way!
5. Achieve and Adjust
Enjoy the satisfaction of checking things off! When you accomplish something, consider if it was too easy or too hard of a goal, so you can make the adjustment to the next goal(s) you tee up for yourself.
